Bloating, whether painful, embarrassing or unsightly — or all three — has long been something that we’ve suffered in silence, and we are increasingly turning to the internet to uncover potential causes.

This week, a YouGov survey for the British Dietetic Association (BDA) found that half of us believe that we or a family member have a dietary issue related to our digestion, despite not having been tested by a medical professional. After googling symptoms such as bloating, we are self-diagnosing food intolerances and allergies. According to the poll of 2,000 adults, 8 per cent said they had self-diagnosed intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley
